Study abroad Amalfi weekend plan
Overview
A two-night study-abroad weekend in Positano works when Friday's journey and Sunday's return leave you a useful Saturday. Rome and Florence need different travel allowances. Choose the full connections and a room for your dates before committing to the weekend.

Friday: travel and settle in
From Rome, compare a selected high-speed train to Naples with a route through Salerno; the best choice depends on the date, season, and onward connection. From Florence, allow the longer mainline journey and choose an earlier departure. If you start at an airport, allow time to reach the relevant city station before counting the coast connection. Use the Rome-to-Positano route guide for the detailed decision and live checks.
Arrive, walk the real uphill approach to the hostel, and check in during the published 15:00–22:00 window. Keep Friday dinner simple and use the terrace or a short local walk to reset. Do not build the plan around a guaranteed late arrival; message reception with your selected itinerary if the journey may run late.
Saturday: choose a local day or one excursion
For a relaxed local day, choose Spiaggia Grande or Fornillo, time for lunch and a walk around Positano. If you want the Path of the Gods, give the hike and its transport the main part of the day, start appropriately early and check conditions; do not fit the full trail after a beach morning. The alternative is a carefully timed Amalfi and Ravello excursion using current connections.
Choose one of those plans, then allow for queues and the return uphill to Brikette. Leave the evening simple. For room coordination, see the friends' accommodation guide.
Sunday: a calm departure
Pack before bed, check out by 10:00, and use the early morning for coffee or a short viewpoint walk. Select the return bus, ferry, or Naples connection from the live timetable for your date. Leave a real buffer before a flight, class, or other fixed commitment.
For post-checkout luggage storage, enrol through the guest app. Brikette must receive your agreement to the terms and conditions, and storage is subject to availability. It is free until 15:00. If you have not returned by 15:00, bags transfer automatically to chargeable porter storage. Read the full conditions; if hostel storage is unavailable, arrange an alternative before leaving your bags.
Rooms, usable time, and cost checks
Check the current room page for the actual dates. Nightly prices, occupancy, room rules, and availability change with the selected stay; this article does not promise a student rate or invent a weekend total. Check in is 15:00–22:00 and check out is 10:00.
For a group, ask reception about compatible room availability and the process for requesting nearby beds. A request is not a guarantee of exclusive occupancy or a particular bunk. Compare the current dorm and private options before booking.
Compare the current room options and selected-date total. Read payment and cancellation conditions for the rate you choose.
| Stay element | Two-night planning check |
|---|---|
| Friday | Full transport connection, uphill arrival, check-in and a simple dinner |
| Saturday | A local beach day OR one substantial excursion |
| Sunday | Short morning, checkout and the complete onward connection |
| Cost | Selected train, local transport, accommodation, meals and chosen activities |
Florence alternative: three nights, Thursday to Sunday
Write the return requirement first: the time you need to be back in Florence, not simply the day. That determines how much margin the Sunday journey needs and whether the trip is realistic around classes or work.
Then reserve the accommodation nights. A Thursday arrival with a Sunday departure means Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Friday and Saturday are the two full days. Thursday and Sunday still need transport, meals and some flexibility; they are not free extra sightseeing days.
A two-night version may work for some travellers, but it usually leaves less room for changing conditions and unhurried time. Decide whether that reduced stay still justifies the journey rather than assuming every weekend must contain a major trip.
| Day | Main purpose | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday | Travel from Florence and settle into Positano. | That a late gateway arrival guarantees a late hostel check-in. |
| Friday | A local Positano day. | That you need an expensive excursion to make the day worthwhile. |
| Saturday | One planned outing or another local day. | That several famous destinations fit comfortably into one day. |
| Sunday | Checkout and the full return journey. | That the final possible connection is a sensible plan. |
Friday: give Positano a full day
A first full day spent locally lets the journey lead somewhere rather than immediately beginning another one. Explore town, choose a beach plan and leave time to return without rushing.
Use the beach comparison to decide between the settings and understand public versus paid areas. [I01-11] A beach service can be a deliberate purchase, but it is not a compulsory part of every stay.
Keep lunch and dinner within the budget you have chosen. Do not make the day depend on a particular restaurant reservation unless that meal is genuinely central to the trip. Some of the value of staying overnight is being able to change the pace rather than filling the gap before a return ferry.
For company, use available common spaces and make simple invitations. These are opportunities, not organised activities included with the room.
Saturday: choose one outing, not the whole coast
Pick the experience you would be most disappointed to miss. That might be a properly planned walk or a single coastal outing. A ferry-and-shuttle approach to Bomerano for the Path of the Gods is one published option, but service and trail conditions must be checked for the intended day. [I01-12]
Alternatively, choose a ferry visit to another town and understand what the ticket includes. Travelmar's through tickets are not automatically hop-on-hop-off passes. [I01-13] An intermediate stop requires the right ticket and later service.
Keep a local alternative. Poor sea conditions, a trail restriction or simply wanting to slow down should not make the day feel wasted. You booked a stay in Positano, not only a departure point for somewhere else.
Avoid an itinerary that depends on completing a hike, visiting Capri and spending an unhurried afternoon in Amalfi on the same day. A short trip improves when one experience is enjoyed properly.
Student package or independent stay: what changes?
The right-hand column is not automatically cheaper or more authentic. The left-hand column is not automatically restrictive or impersonal. It depends on which work you want someone else to do.
| Decision | Organised package | Independent Positano stay |
|---|---|---|
| Where you sleep | The accommodation/base specified by the operator. | The room and town you select. |
| Who plans the route | The operator sets the core itinerary. | You plan the travel and choose activities. |
| Company | A booked group and trip leadership are part of the format. | Opportunities depend on accommodation, activities and who is there. |
| Flexibility | Changes must work within the group programme. | You can leave days open, subject to your own reservations. |
| Support | The operator supplies the support described in its terms. | You manage separate providers; hostel staff are not your tour manager. |
| Cost | Start with the exact departure price, then add exclusions. | Add every component; the bed price is only one line. |
Check the operators before booking
Use Trenitalia or Italo for trains, EAV for the Sorrento connection, SITA Sud for buses and Travelmar for its ferries. Check the return journey first if you have a fixed Sunday commitment.
Tips
- Choose the Rome or Florence train only after checking the selected date and the full coast connection.
- Choose either a local beach day or one main excursion on Saturday, with time for queues and the uphill approach.
- Confirm room eligibility, check-in, checkout, and group requests with reception.
- Pack light and arrange luggage storage before checkout if you need the extra time.
FAQs
Can students do Positano in two nights?
Yes, if Friday is travel, Saturday has one main choice, and Sunday stays flexible. A whole trail, beach day, and coast circuit together will make the weekend too tight.
Are cheap rooms or fares guaranteed?
No. Check the selected date, room, and operator directly; prices, availability, and schedules change.
What are check-in and checkout times?
The published windows are 15:00–22:00 for check-in and 10:00 for checkout. Confirm the current instructions before travelling.
