You will see great views within 15 minutes of leaving the hostel. The full hike to the village takes around 1–2 hours depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views.
How strenuous is the Santa Maria del Castello hike?
It is quite strenuous — significantly more demanding than the Path of the Gods. You should assess your fitness level before attempting and allow extra time if you are not used to steep mountain terrain.
When should I avoid doing this hike?
Avoid hiking between 11am and 4pm during summer months due to the extreme heat on the exposed mountain trail. Early morning starts are strongly recommended.
What should I bring on the Santa Maria del Castello hike?
Bring sturdy hiking shoes with good grip for steep, uneven terrain; at least 1.5 litres of water per person (refill opportunities are limited); sun protection including a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses; and light snacks or lunch if you plan to spend time at the village restaurant.
