Path of the Gods: Budget-Friendly Bus & Hike

Prefer to stay on wheels? This route takes the SITA bus from Positano to Amalfi and onward to Bomerano before hiking the Path of the Gods back toward Nocelle. It is dependable in rough seas and often the quickest way to reach the full trail.

Buses get busy in peak season, so buy tickets the day before if possible and arrive early at each stop.

Buy tickets and plan your timing

You need three bus tickets per person: Positano → Amalfi, Amalfi → Bomerano, and Nocelle → Positano. Ask the staff at Bar Internazionale for the best combination (single or integrated).

Check the SITA timetable posted inside the bar or via the Unico Campania app. Aim for a morning departure to avoid queues and midday sun on the trail.

Pack water, snacks, and sun protection—there are no services between Bomerano and Nocelle.

Ride from Bar Internazionale to Amalfi

Exit the hostel, turn left, and reach Bar Internazionale in about two minutes. Buy tickets, then wait on the opposite side of the road for the Amalfi-bound bus.

Validate your ticket when boarding. The journey takes 45–60 minutes depending on traffic and includes several switchbacks with sweeping sea views.

When you arrive in Amalfi, stay near the same bus bays—you will connect to the Agerola service from there.

Pause in Amalfi (optional)

If you have a gap before the next bus, wander a short distance into town for coffee or pastries. Return to the terminal at least 10 minutes before departure.

Queue early during summer as the bus fills quickly. The driver may limit boarding once all seats and safe standing room are taken.

Bus uphill to Bomerano

Board the bus marked 'Agerola/Bomerano'. Use your second ticket and keep a hand free to steady yourself on tight curves.

Alight at the Bomerano stop opposite Ristorante Jerla. Cross the road, take the side street to the piazza, then follow signs to the Path of the Gods trailhead.

Hike to Nocelle

Follow the Sentiero degli Dei signage across terraces and ridges. Allow 2.5–3 hours for the hike with photo stops.

Carry litter out with you and respect private farmland along the path.

4. Once through the piazza, look for the notice board and a turn to the left, this is where the trail begins. Follow the path to a section with wooden steps.

Navigate Nocelle and reach the bus stop

When the trail turns to concrete, you have reached Nocelle. Keep right at the first junction to avoid the long staircase down to Positano.

Walk about 175 metres to the small car park and bus shelter. Arrive early; buses occasionally park just before the stop when the lot is full.

Return to Positano

Use your final ticket to ride the Nocelle/Montepertuso bus back to Bar Internazionale or Chiesa Nuova.

If you miss the bus, you can walk the road (around 4 km) but be prepared for a sustained downhill with traffic.

FAQs

How crowded are the buses?

Morning services fill quickly in summer. Arrive early, queue calmly, and be ready to stand. Drivers may refuse boarding once the aisle is full.

Can I stop in Amalfi for sightseeing?

Yes—allow at least one full bus interval (30–60 minutes) so you have time to explore and still rejoin the queue before the next Agerola departure.

What if I miss the Nocelle bus back?

Check the posted timetable at the stop. If the next bus is over an hour away, you can walk the paved road down to Positano in about 45–60 minutes.

How do I read the SITA bus timetable?

Reading the Rows: The rows in the first column represent different bus stops along the route.

Reading the Columns: The timetable assigns an alphabetical letter to each scheduled journey, which are listed as headers in each column. If you are traveling Monday through Saturday, look for columns 'F' and 'G'. If you are traveling on Sunday or a holiday, look for columns 'G' and 'H'.

Combining Rows and Columns: Choose your departure and arrival bus stops, then check the columns to see when buses are available and what time they will arrive at your destination. For example, to see the departure time from Sorrento, look at the Sorrento row. To see the arrival time in Positano (Chiesa Nuova / Bar Internazionale), look at the Positano (Chiesa Nuova) row.
